Trip to point Reyes with Mom and Dad
May 28, 2006
Point Reyes lies on Highway 1 - the Pacific Coast Highway. Its about 50 miles or so north of San Francisco. Me and my parents started off to Point Reyes in the morning. Mom cooked our lunch for the way. It was after about 35 years that my mom and dad passed over the Golden Gate bridge once again. It was a very clear sunny afternoon and a great day to be out.
On the way we stopped at quite a few beautiful beaches just to enoy the views. The drive along PCH was simply fabulous with lots of vista points to stop at and we were in no hurry.
There were quite a few drivers who seemed to be in some kind of hurry to get from point A to point B and were quite frustrated with my driving below the speed limit. Nevertheless mom enjoyed the pace a lot with enough time to watch the ocean along the way.
On the way to Point Reyes there are several water bodies where if you are interested in birds, you will see quite a lot of them. By the time we reached Point Reyes it was around 2:30 and we were starving. We decided to have lunch before we embarked on the half a mile hike to Point Reyes.
The path to Point Reyes is a bit of a climb but my parents managed it. The views of the beach from the height are amazing. It was very windy here, you better not be carrying an umbrella or you will be swept off. It can quite chilly here beacuse of the heavy winds. In fact the wind is so hard and persistant here that all trees grow tilted to one side. That is quite fascinating.
The lighthouse was very beautiful but the descent and the climb to it over the stairs is quite a tough one. My parents have climbed tougher stairs to temples in India, but it would too much for them. In fact it would be a tough one even for someone young like me.
Point Reyes is an amazing short trip to go from the Bay area. There are some hiking trails here too. I have been there twice and plan to go there annually.
